Review of Updates in the Tech Sector This Week

1. A report by The Independent revealed that some TikTok influencers were spreading misleading information about birth control to their followers who are in millions. The report was made in collaboration with Alethea, a software company.

The TikTok influencers spread false health information, telling millions of people that birth control is more bad than good. Three famous influencers have been identified to be involved in the circulation of these misleading videos published between February 2021 and July 2024. The videos got 21,000 shares and 15 million views. 115 out of the 1,449 videos shared by the three influencers used the hashtag #birthcontrol to garner more reach. The report uncovered several misleading tapes on TikTok that claimed birth control had more negative impacts on mental health or cancer than positive ones.

It was also suggested in several of the now-deleted videos that women should “detox” after ending their birth control prescription. A herbal medication known as Queen Anne’s Lace was also touted as a potential contraceptive.

Tamay Besiroglu, founder of Mechanize, announced the launch of the AI work automation startup via a post on X on Thursday. According to him, the startup’s goal is to completely automate all work and the entire economy.

The Startup was founded by Epoch, a non-profit AI research organization. However, netizens have lambasted the startup following its announcement to automate all jobs. The complaints centered on the startup’s mission which many fear will render human workers irrelevant in the economic space.

3. Two students with a modest level of expertise in AI have created an open-source AI model named Dia. It can generate podcast-style clips, similar to Google’s NotebookLM. This is a quite impressive development in the tech sector.

Toby Kim, one of the founders of Dia began studying voice AI three months ago with a coworker. Based in Korea, Toby is based in Korea and is now one of the co-founders of Nari Labs, the company that created the recently published model.

4. Facebook’s parent company, Meta has announced the launch of a new App named “Edits”.

The Meta Edits tool is comparable to the video editing tool CapCut. According to the firm, this will allow producers to use Edits to keep track of video ideas and find inspiration for new material. Additionally, users can use its AI tools and effects to produce videos.

The app is available for download for both Android and iOS users. Meta has generously made all of the app’s features available for free. However, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri hinted that subsequent versions of Edits might come with premium features for paid subscribers.

5. Also from tech this week, Eve, a platform for legal professionals has launched Reasoning Mode AI. It claims that the new model has superior reasoning capabilities that allow it to perform difficult legal analysis on par with a senior-level attorney.

The company described its Reasoning Mode AI as “a powerful new tool that transforms how legal professionals work,” and called it “a significant leap forward in legal technology”. It performs deep analysis and gives comprehensive results.

6. Moniepoint has launched its UK app, which focuses on the nearly $21 billion in remittances that the diaspora sends each year. Moniepoint’s new entry into the UK market would present fierce competition for fintechs like LemFi and Send, which are already used by Nigerians in the UK.

They have a track record of facilitating quick transactions and an easy registration process in Nigeria. Moniepoint is also making its first foray outside of Africa with this move.

7. Adobe released the first edition of its free Adobe Content Authenticity app on Thursday, April 24. One of the app’s features is called Content Credentials. It is a type of cryptographic metadata that includes important details about the content. It contains the name of the creator, the date, time, and the tools used. All of this information is entered by the creator of the content.
