According to Bloomberg News, Italy is in advanced negotiations with Elon Musk’s SpaceX for a €1.5 billion ($1.55 billion) deal to enhance the country’s secure telecommunications network.

The proposed five-year contract, which has already received approval from Italy’s Intelligence Services and Defence Ministry, aims to provide the government with encrypted telephone and internet services. It also includes communication solutions for Italy’s military in the Mediterranean region and the deployment of satellite services for emergencies, such as terrorist attacks or natural disasters.

This deal would mark a significant partnership between SpaceX and the Italian government if finalised. It would showcase the strategic importance of satellite-based technologies in securing national communications. The project aligns with Italy’s broader plans to explore satellite-based connectivity to enhance high-speed internet rollout across the country.

The negotiations come shortly after Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni met with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida. Meloni has developed a strong rapport with Elon Musk, a known Trump ally, further solidifying the relationship between Italy and SpaceX.

Neither SpaceX nor Italy’s Defence Ministry has commented on the ongoing discussions.

SpaceX’s potential involvement in Italy’s secure communication network underscores the increasing reliance on satellite technology for national security. With the rising demand for robust and encrypted telecommunications infrastructure, such collaborations will likely set a precedent for other nations exploring similar partnerships.

While the deal is yet to be finalized, its approval by key Italian authorities highlights the government’s commitment to leveraging cutting-edge satellite technology for national security and emergency response.
