The change comes after an update to WhatsApp’s policy platform, now limiting AI tools capable of performing various tasks. WhatsApp says that it wants stricter oversight of automated systems and favours tools built for specific, well-defined purposes over general AI assistants.
Reasons Behind WhatsApp’s Decision
A significant factor for this decision by Whatsapp is the safeguarding of privacy and data. This is part of WhatsApp’s push to increase restrictions on message sharing on its platform. WhatsApp is designed for private chats, and the introduction of advanced AI tools raises concerns regarding the processing, storage, and security of messages, particularly in light of increasing global data regulations.
A different reason is control of the platform. WhatsApp is transitioning to permit only specialised bots, such as customer service, banking assistance, order tracking, and ticketing helpers. General AI tools capable of performing nearly any task no longer align with that direction.
Safety and misinformation issues are also present. Large AI models may occasionally provide inaccurate responses or generate content that is challenging for WhatsApp to monitor within private conversations. Restricting these tools helps WhatsApp mitigate these risks.
Will AI Remain Accessible on WhatsApp?
WhatsApp is not entirely prohibiting AI. AI integration on WhatsApp will remain, but will work under certain restrictions. Bots created for specific tasks in businesses with strict operational controls will continue to be permitted. Meta’s AI tools are expected to remain accessible on the platform.
