Santander’s new app feature aims to block out fraudsters from hacking banking apps.
Santander Bank is a major retail and commercial bank operating in the United States and other countries, has introduced a new app feature designed to prevent fraudsters from accessing banking applications.
The latest update for Santander’s OneApp banking application features screen-sharing detection technology. This feature automatically blurs a customer’s mobile display and stops them from performing banking activities when a scammer uses screen-sharing tools on their device. This follows the bank’s data revealing that over £1.8 million was stolen from customers in 2024 via these types of scam.
Chris Ainsley, who leads fraud strategy at Santander UK, stated: “With technological progress, scammers evolve as well.” We possess various specific alerts for customers. However, these criminals are cunning and will manipulate situations to gain access to a customer’s personal data.

Customers are often approached unexpectedly via phone, email, text, or WhatsApp. They receive various messages that either present a new investment opportunity or falsely alert them to a technical issue with their phone.
The fraudster will then convince victims to install genuine screen-sharing applications like AnyDesk or TeamViewer. These software can grant scammers entry to their mobile displays and private details, including banking login information.
Mr. Ainsley stated: “Our newest advancement focuses on protecting unsuspecting customers. It safeguards clients who frequently find themselves in a state of distress.”
Santander had earlier issued a distinct alert indicating that screen-sharing technology was found on a customer’s device. However, this latest technology will enhance protection by automatically blurring users’ mobile banking applications, protecting their private data.
The feature is presently accessible exclusively to users of the OneApp banking application on Apple iOS 18 and higher. The bank has announced that it will soon be available to Android users.
