Climate fintech giant Nithio has launched the Fund for Utility and E-mobility Lending (FUEL). This is a senior secured debt fund created to support electric mobility and the infrastructure that makes it work across Sub-Saharan Africa. The fund will offer loans ranging from $2 million to $15 million. These loans will be backed by physical assets such as vehicles, batteries, and charging equipment, as well as the cash flows those assets generate.

Building on Proven Experience

Nithio is not new to African climate finance. Through its earlier vehicle called FAIR, the company has already committed about $55 million to 18 borrowers working in clean energy and related markets. Its risk assessment system draws on more than 100 million payment records from 19 Sub-Saharan African countries. That data, originally used to understand credit risk in off-grid solar, now helps the firm evaluate e-mobility businesses more confidently.

Recent investments through FAIR showed both the promise and the challenge of the sector. Support for companies such as MAX in West Africa and an earlier facility for Spiro highlighted strong commercial demand. At the same time, those deals revealed a clear shortage of suitable debt capital for the businesses that want to grow electric fleets and supporting networks. FUEL was designed to fill that gap with a dedicated vehicle focused on e-mobility.

Who Can Access the Capital

The fund targets a specific category of startups and firms including fleet operators that run electric motorcycles, vans, or other commercial vehicles can seek financing. So can firms that provide fleet financing to drivers, operators of charging stations and battery-swapping networks, energy providers that supply clean power to those sites, original equipment manufacturers, and related service businesses. A selective portion of the fund will also support commercial and industrial energy projects, adding some diversification.

Because the loans are senior and secured against hard assets and contracted revenues, lenders gain a stronger claim if difficulties arise. This structure is familiar in other infrastructure sectors and aims to make the financing more attractive to institutional investors while remaining usable for growing African businesses.

Significance for Africa’s Mobility Industry and Public

Electric vehicles offer clear benefits in the African context. They cost less to run than petrol models once the initial purchase is managed. Battery-swapping models, already operating in several markets, allow drivers to exchange a depleted battery for a charged one in minutes, avoiding long waits for charging. When the power comes from solar, the environmental gains grow further and operating costs can drop even more.

For drivers and small transport businesses, cheaper running costs mean higher daily earnings and greater resilience when fuel prices rise. Cleaner air in crowded cities benefits public health. Reduced reliance on imported petrol also supports broader economic goals. The challenge has always been the high upfront cost of the vehicles and the supporting infrastructure. Dedicated debt finance of the kind FUEL offers can help more operators scale without relying solely on scarce equity capital.

Forging a Clear Path for Expansion for Electric Vehicle Fleets

Nithio has begun the fundraising process for FUEL and aims for a first close of $100 million in 2027 on the way to the full $150 million target. The timing reflects growing interest in African climate infrastructure, even as competition for development capital increases.

Success will depend on careful selection of borrowers, disciplined risk management, and the continued growth of the underlying businesses. If the fund performs as planned, it can widen the pipeline of capital available to fleet operators and charging networks that are still too small for larger development finance institutions yet too capital-intensive for ordinary bank loans.

FUEL is offering a clearer path for electric vehicle fleets to expand and for the people who depend on them to benefit from cleaner, more affordable mobility.
