In a passionate appeal for transformation, the Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa, CCIE, has encouraged Nigeria’s construction sector to transition “from blueprints to bytes” by adopting digital technologies. He emphasised that this change is crucial for enhancing project delivery, increasing productivity, and placing the industry at the cutting edge of innovation.

In a keynote presentation titled “Digital Transformation in the Nigerian Construction Industry” at a two-day workshop hosted by the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS), FCT Chapter, the DG discussed the tools essential for this upcoming revolution. Inuwa was represented by Dr Yahaya Onimisi, the Agency’s Acting Director of Project Management. He emphasized that digital technologies are essential foundations for the future and not merely optional enhancements.

Inuwa emphasised that digital technologies are transforming the industry, such as Building Information Modelling (BIM), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Blockchain, Data Analytics, and Cloud Collaboration tools. He believes using these tools is a guaranteed way to enhance service delivery, improve accuracy and increase productivity. Also, it would help develop more intelligent project management systems throughout the construction value chain.

Digital Technologies: A Disruption, Yet a Chance to Flourish

The DG observed that although the sector is experiencing project delays, budget overruns, and opposition to change, digital technology offers both a disruption and a chance. Nigerian Quantity Surveyors (QS) can transition from outdated methods to modern innovative solutions. He described this transformation as adopting new technology and ” altering business processes, culture, and skills.”

The NITDA leader emphasised the need for enhanced collaboration between NITDA and NIQS to boost digital adoption. He identified key areas for partnership, such as capacity enhancement, policy synchronisation and innovation centres. Together, this creates a sector-specific digital transformation blueprint in line with the agency’s Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP) 2.0.

Lastly, Inuwa finished by restating NITDA’s strategic investments, government support, and ongoing professional development. NITDA’s partnerships with organisations such as the NMA and NUJ—the construction sector is creating new prospects, enhancing transparency. Also, it is accomplishing more efficient project management results.
