The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has announced plans to provide websites for every Local Government Council in Nigeria. The website initiative marks a significant step towards enhancing transparency, accountability, and public access to information at the local level.
The website initiative was revealed during a courtesy visit by Kashifu Inuwa, Director-General of NITDA. Along with his management team, the DG paid a working visit to Dr Musa Adamu Aliyu, Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). He aims for the two agencies to work together to enhance open governance in Nigeria’s 774 local government areas.
NITDA states that each local government will soon have a designated website. This will enable them to showcase important information like budgets, development projects, and community initiatives. The agency states that the platforms will enable citizens to easily track government expenditures. Also, people can monitor progress on community projects and engage directly with their elected representatives.

Inuwa states that the initiative embodies NITDA’s mission to promote digital transformation in governance. He emphasised that technology can significantly reduce corruption and close the information gap between citizens and governmental bodies.
Harnessing Technology for Transparency and Accountability in Governance
The collaboration aligns with the tenets of the United Nations Convention against Corruption. The tenets emphasise the use of technology to promote transparency and accountability in public entities.
ICPC Chairman Aliyu praised NITDA for the initiative, calling it a proactive step that could enhance corruption prevention at the grassroots level.
The Federal tech agency urges Nigerians to look forward to the significant transformative effect that this website initiative will offer. Residents will receive online access to their municipality’s financial plans and project information. This creates additional avenues for community engagement and monitoring.
The partnership highlights NITDA’s overarching commitment to leveraging technology to enhance public confidence. Additionally, technology can improve governance outcomes and make transparency a fundamental aspect of Nigeria’s digital economy initiatives.
