Google AI Mode Expands with Smarter Multimodal Search

Date:

Google AI Mode has taken a new look with its multimodal search brought by the Google Search experiment. This allows users to ask complex, multi-part questions and follow-ups to dig deeper into a topic. Users accessing the AI Mode can now tap the feature to ask questions about photos uploaded or taken earlier with their camera.

In a blog post on Monday, Google said that Google Lens’ multimodal capabilities power the new image that can analyze functionality in AI Mode.

Google AI Mode can understand the entire scene in an image, including how objects relate to each other. Google contends it can also assess their materials, colors, shapes, and arrangement. In the “query fan-out” technique, AI Mode asks multiple questions about the image and objects shown in it. This gives an avenue for providing more detailed information than a traditional Google search.

For instance, you could snap a photo of your bookshelf and enter the query, “If I enjoyed these, what are some similar books that are highly rated?” AI Mode will identify each book and then list recommended books. It’ll also add links to learn about and/or purchase them.

Google AI Mode also allows you to ask follow-up questions. The essence of this is to narrow down your search. This could be “I’m looking for a quick read. Which one of these recommendations is the shortest?”

As part of Monday’s announcement, AI Mode will be available to millions of users enrolled in Labs. Additionally, Google’s home for experimental features and products is also available. Before this, AI Mode was only available to Google One AI Premium subscribers.

The company launched Google AI Mode last month, focusing on popular services like Perplexity and OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search. Google has said that it plans to continue refining the user experience and expanding the feature’s functionality. Similarly, Google recently made Gemini 2.0 Pro free for all users.
