A newly rumoured feature for Android devices might urge people to answer crucial calls. This is significant in notifying individuals when it is direly important for them to respond to their phones.

The new feature was discovered in the newest public beta version of the Phone App by Google. The company driving innovation with this new notification that alerts a recipient’s phone that their call is urgent.

The feature is named “Expressive Calling,” and it can be found concealed in the code of app version 201.0.833052069. The feature is currently unavailable to the general public. Also, it’s uncertain whether it will be included in the app’s final version. The feature is expected to be listed under the title “Call Reason.”

The feature may also be able to bypass the recipient’s Do Not Disturb settings if your call is deemed extremely urgent. However, access to the feature will be restricted to your contacts only to prevent abuse by scam callers.

It remains to be seen how the new feature will work when calling people who are not using the Phone App by Google. The app is not available for iPhone, and it is not the default on every Android device. We’ll need to wait for an official statement to find out if it will be restricted to specific devices.

Earlier this year, the Google Phone App received a Material 3 design update for Android 16, featuring an improved call screen and a new favourites bar. Call log is now simpler, easier to view chronologically and see multiple calls from the same number. Changes based on user feedback aim to avoid accidental declines/answers.
