From January 1, 2025, WhatsApp will no longer support Android devices running KitKat (4.4) or older operating systems. This change will affect users with phones released around 9-10 years ago. iPhone users, however, have until May 5, 2025, to update their devices.

The Reason Behind the Decision

Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, has cited security and functionality concerns as the primary reasons for discontinuing support for older operating systems. As technology advances, older devices struggle to keep up with new app features and fail to protect sensitive data effectively. Without security patches, these devices become increasingly vulnerable to cybercrime.

Affected Devices

Several Android devices from prominent brands like Samsung, Motorola, and HTC will no longer support WhatsApp after January 1, 2025. Some of the affected devices include:

iPhone users with devices running iOS 15.1 or lower will also lose WhatsApp support after May 5, 2025. This includes iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus users.

Meta’s Broader Efforts

This move is part of Meta’s ongoing efforts to maintain WhatsApp’s safety, efficiency, and compatibility with emerging technologies. As WhatsApp evolves, older phones are unable to support the app’s new features, prompting Meta to discontinue support for certain systems at specific intervals.

Previous Withdrawals

WhatsApp has previously ended support for older models of both Android and iOS devices. This latest decision marks another step in the company’s efforts to prioritize security and functionality.
