WhatsApp has introduced a new feature called Group Message History to address the common issue of new members missing previous conversations when joining a group chat. The feature is designed to eliminate the “fear of missing out” by allowing newcomers to catch up on discussions that took place before they were added.
The new feature enables both group admins and existing members to share a selection of recent messages with newly added participants. Importantly, WhatsApp has confirmed that this shared message history will remain protected by end-to-end encryption, to ensure that the privacy and security of the communications are maintained.
When a user adds a new person to a group, a pop-up notification will appear, offering the option to share the recent chat history. Those adding the new member can then choose to share a specific number of messages, ranging from a minimum of 25 to a maximum of 100 of the most recent texts.
Group Admins Control Access to Group Message History
Group admins on WhatsApp retain control over this new feature, as they can disable the message history sharing option entirely within the group settings. This ensures that admins can manage their group’s privacy according to their specific preferences.
Whenever recent messages are shared with a new participant, all group members will receive a notification about it. The shared history will include comprehensive details for each message, such as the original sender’s identity and the exact timestamps, providing full context for the new member.
WhatsApp has confirmed that the Group Message History feature is currently being rolled out to users. The rollout is described as gradual, meaning it may take some time before it becomes available to everyone on the platform.
