WhatsApp for Android is developing a new Advanced Chat Privacy feature that would allow users to take more control over the handling of their shared messages. The feature improves content privacy in private or group conversations when chatting, by preventing media files from being automatically stored in the recipient’s gallery.
Furthermore, it might include settings to prevent the export of complete chat history, indicating Meta’s (Whatsapp’s parent company) continued attempts to improve user privacy and lessen undesired sharing or discussions being leaked.
Already Available on WhatsApp Beta
WhatsApp’s beta version 2.25.10.4 shows that they are developing an Advanced Chat Privacy feature that will allow users more choice over how their shared media is handled.
The report from WABetaInfo says that the feature will be available via the app settings on WhatsApp for Android and be optional. When this option is activated, conversation participants won’t be able to store incoming material, like pictures or videos, in their gallery automatically. The receiver will be informed via a pop-up that auto-saving is turned off because of the sender’s privacy settings. Precisely, the message reads, “Advanced chat privacy has been turned on, and prevents media auto-saving to your device’s gallery,”
This feature effectively returns control over media retention to the sender. It could be especially helpful for users who want to communicate confidential or sensitive content without others being able to access it. In addition to media content restrictions, the Advanced Chat Privacy tool might also restrict chat history exports. It will also prevent users participating in a conversation from using Meta AI if the feature is switched on.
Admittedly, disappearing messages already provide a certain amount of privacy, this new feature is expected to extend those safeguards to standard chats. It indicates WhatsApp’s larger effort to make privacy settings more reliable for daily interactions.
