The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially launched its new Digital Certificate Services System, known as WAEC DigiCert, across all five of its member nations: The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone. This unveiling marks a significant step toward modernising the council’s certificate management and distribution processes across the West African sub-region. The announcement was made in a release signed by Demianus Ojijeogu, the Head of Public Affairs at the WAEC Headquarters in Accra, Ghana, signalling a unified rollout for the educational body.
The WAEC DigiCert platform is a dual mobile and web-based application engineered to provide substantial benefits to candidates, educational institutions, and other stakeholders. It is designed with user-friendly features that streamline how individuals interact with their academic credentials. Core functions include allowing users to easily access, formally request, verify the authenticity of, and share digital versions of their original certificates. The system also offers the practical utility of helping candidates recover lost WAEC examination numbers, addressing a common administrative hurdle.
Guaranteeing Authentic Digital WAEC Certificates
A key promise of the new system is its reliability and the guaranteed authenticity of the digital certificates it issues, which helps combat fraud. The cost benefits for users are also emphasised, as it reduces the expenses and logistical burdens traditionally associated with requesting and collecting physical certificates. This digital approach is expected to be more efficient and accessible for candidates, many of whom may be located far from the urban centres where WAEC offices are typically situated.
WAEC DigiCert Sees Successful Pilot Phase
The launch follows a successful pilot phase in Nigeria, which yielded positive feedback from both candidates and educational institutions worldwide. This international endorsement from tertiary institutions is crucial, as it assures that the digital certificates will be accepted for admissions and verifications globally. The pilot’s positive response helped pave the way for the system’s expansion to all member countries, ensuring standardised service across the region.
WAEC has advised the general public and all stakeholders to adopt the WAEC DigiCert service to circumvent the administrative challenges and bottlenecks that often accompany manual certificate issuance and physical collection. However, the Council has moved to reassure candidates that the traditional process of printing and issuing physical certificates will continue unchanged, ensuring that those who prefer or require a hard copy are not disadvantaged by this new digital innovation.
Accessibility
To facilitate access, the WAEC DigiCert mobile application is available for download on both the Apple App Store for iOS devices and the Google Play Store for Android devices.
