Instagram Threads has initiated a move to catch up with its top competitor, X, in terms of mobile app users. According to new data from market intelligence provider SimilarWeb, the growth of Threads vs. X users is becoming a central narrative in the tech space. In June 2025, Threads’ mobile app for iOS and Android recorded 115.1 million daily active users. This marks a 127.8% year-over-year growth. Conversely, X reached 132 million daily active users, but with a 15.2% yearly decline.

Moving forward, Bluesky, a decentralized form, witnessed a remarkable 372.5% yearly growth in June, courtesy of the company’s strategies. Notwithstanding, it only attained 4.1 million daily active users globally. It is noteworthy that Bluesky currently has more than 37 million registered users, according to its internal data.

Threads vs X User Growth on Mobile

Furthermore, Bluesky gained traction after the U.S. presidential elections. This was the time when many users exited X owing to Elon Musk’s alignment with President Trump. However, that growth began to fade earlier this year. Interestingly, complaints have emerged about Bluesky becoming a left-leaning echo chamber. Consequently, this caused some users to lean towards Threads.

Threads vs X user growth

Although Bluesky offers a flexible social networking structure, the key competition remains between Threads and X in terms of user growth. Additionally, Threads is rapidly closing the gap in mobile usage. Meta’s monetization for Threads currently depends solely on advertising revenue.

That rivalry remains close only on mobile platforms. X still holds an advantage on the web. According to Similarweb, X logged 145.8 million average daily web visits globally in June 2025. Threads only saw 6.9 million daily web visits in the same period, which is remarkably low.

Threads vs X user growth differs starkly between mobile and web. The app is slightly ahead of Bluesky, which had 5.3 million daily web visits. Bluesky’s numbers suggest casual engagement, with users visiting its site without needing to install the app.

Web Traffic Data Shows X Still Leads

Meta prioritized mobile from the start. The app launched on mobile before its web version. As a result, Threads gains more attention among mobile users.

In the United States, the landscape is different. Bluesky had an average of 2.4 million daily web visits in June. Threads trailed with 985,200 visits. X led strongly with 33.1 million daily web visits.

Mobile usage in the U.S. shows tighter competition. Threads logged 15.3 million daily active users, while X reached 22.9 million. In line with recent developments, Bluesky had just 1.1 million daily mobile users in the U.S., according to the data.

Future Projections for Threads and Bluesky

Threads vs X user growth remains a dynamic contest. Bluesky’s future might depend on its open infrastructure and long-term development. Many users joined Bluesky not because of its technology, but due to dissatisfaction with X.

These users may return to X or migrate to Threads if Bluesky fails to meet expectations. Conversely, users drawn to Bluesky for its tech innovation may stay to watch its progress.

As things unfold, Meta’s Threads now reports 350 million monthly active users, according to its latest earnings report. X, being a private firm, no longer shares official user data. Elon Musk previously claimed that X has 600 million monthly active users.
