To further add to its flying wings, there was an OpenAI Voice Mode update on Monday as an advanced feature. The AI voice feature will enable real-time conversations in ChatGPT, making the AI assistant more personable and interrupting users less frequently.
An OpenAI post-training researcher, Manuka Stratta, made the changes known via a video posted on Monday to the company’s official social media pages.
OpenAI’s latest update addresses a frequent problem with AI voice assistants: interrupting users when they pause to think or take a deep breath.
Free users of ChatGPT now have access to a new version of the OpenAI Voice Mode update that lets users pause without being interrupted when speaking to the AI assistant. Similarly, ChatGPT subscribers, including OpenAI’s Plus, Teams, Edu, Business, and Pro tiers, will now get fewer frequent interruptions when using Advanced Voice Mode, as well as an improved personality for the voice assistant.
A company spokesperson confirmed that OpenAI Voice Mode Update subscribers are “more direct, engaging, concise, specific, and creative in their answers.”
The improvements to Advanced Voice Mode come amid intense pressure from competitors in the AI voice assistant space.
Meanwhile, Sesame, an Andreessen Horowitz-backed startup created by Oculus co-founder Brendan Iribe, recently went viral for its natural-sounding AI voice assistants, Maya and Miles. More prominent players are also stepping more aggressively into the AI voice assistant space, apart from the OpenAI Voice Mode Update, such as Amazon, which is preparing to release its LLM-powered version of Alexa.
These updates reveal OpenAI’s dedication to overhauling AI and human interactions. This event will also install a more seamless and natural conversation experience between human beings and AI.
As competition in the AI voice assistant space intensifies, OpenAI’s Voice Mode Update places ChatGPT as a strong contender. It also recently launched an AI for intense research. Therefore, it can be speculated that subsequent updates may further enhance personalization, responsiveness, and adaptability to user preferences.
