OpenAI has made an early bid to acquire Google Chrome if the latter becomes available for sale. Google Chrome is an extremely popular browser that comes pre-installed on millions of smartphones and tablets.

OpenAI, the proprietor of ChatGPT, is interested in Google Chrome if Google is compelled to sell its popular browser. OpenAI intends to turn Chrome into an AI-centric browser. According to a Bloomberg story, ChatGPT CEO Nick Turley stated that OpenAI is considering acquiring Chrome. He stated this at a hearing in Google’s ongoing monopoly case at a US Federal Court. “Yes, we would, as would many other parties,” he stated in response to a query about OpenAI’s interest in acquiring Google Chrome.

Google may be compelled to sell Chrome to lessen its monopolistic control over the online search and advertising industries. It now appears that at least one party is already interested in acquiring it. In the event that his company acquires Chrome Browser, Nick said, it may “introduce users into what an AI-first browsing experience looks like.” He hinted that Chrome Browser would be integrated with ChatGPT, in addition to new features to make it an AI-first browser.

It is also likely that Samsung would stop the pre-installation of Chrome Brower if Google loses control of Chrome. Google currently pays Samsung “a huge sum” to pre-install the Gemini AI app on Galaxy smartphones.

Prosecutors Pile Up Allegations Against Google

The prosecutors have tendered to the US court what it said is evidence proving Google’s use of anti-competitive tactics to maintain its monopoly in internet advertising technology. They asked the court to prevent Google from giving its search engine priority on platforms owned and operated by Google. Such platforms include YouTube, Gemini AI etc. They also want Google’s competitors to be allowed unrestricted visibility on Google Search. They accused Google of paying third companies to maintain its position as the favored search engine

The prosecutors said that Google’s unlawful monopoly has the potential to cause harm to consumers. It might overly restrict competitors and have a detrimental effect on publishers because of its control over ad servers and ad exchanges. If these accusations are proven, Google may be compelled to sell or divest from more than just Chrome.

It will certainly take a long time, perhaps years before Google takes any severe action, like selling Chrome. However, it is a good thing that Samsung already has its own online browser, Samsung Internet. Nobody knows for sure how Chrome Browser would evolve if it is sold, however, millions of Galaxy users may be impacted. Samsung Internet, Samsung’s web browser could be a decent alternative in any eventuality.

Samsung Internet is quite an amazing mobile web browser for Android. The firm attempted to develop a desktop version of its web browser but abandoned the project. It wouldn’t be quite surprising to see Samsung Internet become available across different platforms in the future.
