OpenAI has started testing advertising inside ChatGPT. The move answers growing questions about revenue plans. OpenAI ChatGPT ads will appear for some users in the United States. In addition, the company confirmed the change in a blog post released Friday. It will test ads on the Free and Go tiers. Go subscriptions cost eight dollars per month.

OpenAI says ads will support continued free access. Many users rely on ChatGPT without paying. Advertising offers a direct way to fund that access. In addition, these ChatGPT ads will not appear on any tier, including Plus, Pro, Business, or Enterprise. Those plans remain ad-free for now. This separation preserves value for paying customers.
The company framed the rollout as limited and controlled. It emphasised that the test will remain small. In the same vein, ChatGPT ads represent a cautious shift, not a full rollout, with a view to making the move mark a significant change for the product.
Ads Focus on Placement and Control
Ads will appear at the bottom of conversations. They will relate to the topic discussed. For example, a business query may trigger a business-related ad. Moving forward, OpenAI ChatGPT ads will not interrupt responses. Users can choose to dismiss ads.
OpenAI also added transparency tools. Users can see why a specific ad appears. Similarly, they can also turn off personalisation. That option reduces targeted advertising. OpenAI ChatGPT ads will still show, but without personal signals.

Forging ahead, the company also set age limits. It will not show ads to users under eighteen. OpenAI says it will rely on internal systems to enforce this rule. Moreover, that commitment reflects growing scrutiny around youth exposure.
Importantly, OpenAI promised to answer independently. Ads will not influence responses. The system will not favour advertisers in answers, as these ads will sit alongside conversations, not shape them.
OpenAI ChatGPT ads Support Broader Business Goals
Noteworthy that advertising opens two revenue paths. First, OpenAI earns from non-paying users. Free and Go tiers represent the largest audience. OpenAI ChatGPT ads could generate meaningful income at scale.
Second, ads may push upgrades. Some users will prefer an ad-free experience. That preference could increase subscriptions to higher tiers; therefore, serve as both revenue and conversion tools.
It is also relevant to note that the company addressed privacy concerns, too. It promised not to sell user data to advertisers. Ads will rely on context, not personal profiles. OpenAI ChatGPT ads will use conversation topics, not stored histories.
OpenAI linked advertising to its broader mission. It said revenue supports long-term development goals. The company framed ads as means, not ends in themselves.
For now, OpenAI ChatGPT ads remain limited. However, the test signals a clear direction. ChatGPT has moved from experiment to business platform. Advertising now forms part of that evolution.
