According to Financial Times, Meta, the technology giant behind Facebook and Instagram, is planning to upgrade its Ray-Ban smart glasses with displays as early as the second half of 2025. This development comes after the successful launch of the second-generation smart glasses in November 2023, which boasted an array of AI-powered features.
The new displays will enable users to receive notifications and interact with Meta’s virtual assistant. However, the upgrade will not transform the smart glasses into a full-fledged augmented reality device, unlike Apple’s Vision Pro. Instead, the displays will provide a subtle enhancement to the existing features, which include parking spot reminders, voice messaging, and more.
Meta’s plans for augmented reality (AR) glasses are progressing, with the company’s Orion prototype unveiled in September. Although the consumer version of Orion is still years away, Meta has accelerated its devpment. The final product promises to combine mixed-reality features from Meta’s Quest 3 VR headsets with the convenience of lightweight eyewear.
During the announcement event, CEO Mark Zuckerberg touted the upcoming AR glasses as “the most advanced glasses that the world has ever seen.” With the integration of displays into the Ray-Ban smart glasses and the development of Orion, Meta is poised to revolutionize the wearables technology landscape
As the smart eyewear market continues to grow, Meta’s advancements in AR technology and wearable devices are likely to have a significant impact. With the Ramers, the addition of displays and future AR capabilities will further enhance the user experience and solidify Meta’s position in the market.
