Intel Corporation, facing growing competition in the notebook processor market, has announced a new range of Core Ultra processors that promise to deliver the longest battery life in laptops. The announcement was made on Monday at CES 2025, the annual consumer electronics showcase.
New laptops hitting the market this month will use the latest Intel Core Ultra processors. These chips are designed to improve performance in two key areas: extending battery life and enhancing the ability to run artificial intelligence (AI) functions.
Intel claims an HP laptop using one of the new processors can operate Microsoft Teams for up to 10.5 hours and Microsoft 365 applications for 20.3 hours on a single charge. In comparison, a Dell laptop powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor reportedly offers 9.2 and 18.5 hours, respectively, under similar conditions.
Intel has long been a leader in the computer processor market, but production delays and slow product launches have allowed competitors like AMD and Qualcomm to gain ground. The company’s latest chips are part of its strategy to regain market dominance by catering to corporate PCs and high-end consumer devices.
The new processors also promise improved performance in generative AI applications, a growing area of computing interest. Future designs, including Arrow Lake and Lunar Lake processors, are expected to debut in 2025. They will initially target business machines before expanding to consumer laptops and desktops.
While Intel still commands over 70% of the PC processor market based on its X86 architecture, its position has been eroded by AMD’s advancements and Qualcomm’s adoption of Arm-based technology. The latter, popular in smartphones, is gaining traction in laptops due to its energy efficiency, enabling longer battery life.
Arm-based chip designs are expected to debut in more PCs soon, increasing competition in the processor market. As Intel aims to stay ahead, its focus on AI and battery optimisation reflects evolving consumer and corporate demands.
Intel highlighted its chips’ competitive edge during the CES announcement, noting their superior performance in AI applications compared to rival processors.
These chips are a testament to Intel’s commitment to innovation and efficiency,” the company said.
Intel’s new Core Ultra processors aim to redefine laptop performance, focusing on extended battery life and AI capabilities. As the processor market grows increasingly competitive, Intel’s innovations will play a pivotal role in retaining its market leadership.
