Adobe Content Credentials App aims to address the problem of unethical use of AI-generated images now prevalent on the internet.
The use of generative AI models to create photos that appear realistic has become an internet phenomenon. This has led to the emergence of two prominent problems: Firstly, most of us now struggle to differentiate authentic images from AI-generated ones. Secondly, image creators struggle to keep their work from being used to train the models without their authorization. Adobe’s Content Authenticity app aims to address these problems.
A maiden version of Adobe’s free Adobe Content Authenticity app was unveiled by the company on Thursday, April 24. The app has a feature known as Content Credentials. It is a safe form of cryptographic metadata that contains essential information about the content. It includes the creator’s identity, time, date, and tools used. All of this information can be entered by the creator of the content.

Adobe’s Content Credentials provide authors with the assurance that their work will always be correctly attributed because they remain embedded in the work no matter how the work is altered. Even if the content is duplicated with a screenshot capture, the new version still bears all of the credentials in the original content. The author of the content has a vast range of options for registering their credentials. They can register their name, which can be verified by LinkedIn or social media platforms.
Another special feature is an option that allows creators to decide how their work can be used with AI. They can decide whether they want their work to be used to train AI or generate an AI image. This is because the majority of generative AI text-to-picture models are taught by scouring the entire web for visual information. This means that AI image generators often replicate elements from the works of artists posted on the internet.
Users can only indicate their wishes about the use of their work while using Content Credentials. They cannot actively prevent the misuse of their work. It is quite expected that many internet users will defy the wishes of creators in terms of the use of their work. However, it is hoped that many will honor the creator’s intentions. Nonetheless, it’s important to note that the Content Credentials are permanently etched on the content. This means that user preference information may be taken into consideration in the event of a legal dispute.
Users Can Change and Modify Content Credentials
The Adobe Content Authentic App makes it easy for creators to modify Credentials on any content, similar to editing the information on a photo. Another exciting of this app is that it lets users perform Content Credentials operation in bulk to up to 50 JPG or PNG files at once.

- Use the Inspect tool in the Adobe Content Credentials web app or the Content Validity plugin for Google Chrome to verify an image’s validity and find out more about its Content Credentials.

Adobe says it is working to release updates that support new media formats, including music and video, and higher file sizes.
Future Goals for Adobe Content Credentials
Adobe aims to integrate the Adobe Content Authenticity app with the Creative Cloud applications, like Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom. It wants to establish a single location for maintaining Content Credentials across many applications. In the coming months, LinkedIn will add the credentials used on the Content Authenticity app to its list of supported content credentials.
