Google’s DeepMind is working on developing “world models” that mimic the real world, a crucial step towards achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI). The models will be used to train robots, improve AI training data, and generate realistic environments for movies and video games.

DeepMind is hiring AI researchers and engineers to work on the project, which involves building generative models of the physical world. These models will be used to power world simulators, enabling applications such as visual reasoning, planning, and real-time interactive entertainment.

The project is linked to DeepMind’s Genie 2, a foundation world model that can generate playable worlds. The new world models will be used to enhance Google’s chatbot and video generation capabilities, as well as improve its Waymo and Everyday Robots brands.

Google’s competitors, including Nvidia, OpenAI, and World Labs, are also working on AGI and world models. With the race to develop AGI heating up, Google is under pressure to catch up and achieve its goal of developing AGI before other tech giants.

World models are a relatively new development within AI that could serve a variety of purposes, such as creating real-time interactive media environments for video games and movies, and realistic training scenarios for robots and other AI systems. It’s also part of Google’s push to achieve an artificial general intelligence system, or AGI, before its competitors.
