Google has signed a groundbreaking agreement with Indian startup Varaha, marking the world’s largest biochar carbon removal deal. This deal signifies Google’s commitment to carbon neutrality and highlights the potential of biochar technology for large-scale carbon sequestration.

The agreement entails Google purchasing 100,000 tons of carbon removal credits from Varaha’s industrial biochar project in Gujarat, India. Biochar, a charcoal-like substance produced from biomass pyrolysis, offers a long-term solution for capturing atmospheric carbon dioxide.

Varaha’s project utilizes Prosopis Juliflora, an invasive plant species, as feedstock, contributing to ecological restoration efforts alongside carbon removal.

This deal sets a precedent for biochar technology within the carbon removal sector. Biochar’s scalability, positive impact on soil health, and existing production technology make it a promising solution for companies seeking to offset their carbon footprint. The agreement could inspire other corporations to explore biochar as a viable carbon mitigation strategy.

“Biochar is a promising approach to carbon removal because it has the ability to scale worldwide, using existing technology, with positive side effects for soil health,” said Randy Spock, Google’s carbon removal lead.

This statement emphasizes the attractiveness of biochar for its scalability, established technology, and additional environmental advantages.
