Elon Musk has predicted that there is a one in five chance that a rogue AI system will cause global annihilation. The richest man recently celebrated the birth of his 14th child with Neuralink employee, Shivon Zilis. He stated that he thinks artificial intelligence would surpass human intelligence within the next year or two. He further predicted that AI would surpass humanity in power within the next five years.
“There is a level beyond which AI becomes smarter than all humans combined, which, frankly, is around 2029 or 2030,” he remarked about the development of AI technology. He cautioned that rogue AI may be something we should be worried about but added that he thought there was an 80% probability that AI would make a positive impact on life on Earth.
Overview of The Concerns About AI
The primary concern is the loss of jobs. Artificial intelligence (AI) is predicted to abolish several job categories because machines will be able to complete tasks more efficiently and at a lower cost than humans could. The labor market upheaval that results could hasten economic disparities and possibly lead to destitution. Other worries concerning AI are usually more moral in nature. These anxieties center on the loss of authenticity as AI will be used to produce so much deepfake content that it will be hard to tell what is true. AI might therefore be used to plan disinformation operations, cyberattacks, and even the creation of autonomous weaponry. It’s true that some authoritarian governments, including North Korea and Russia, have started taking advantage of AI’s malicious capabilities.
However, in addition to these more realistic concerns, we should remain mindful of existential concerns. Many people worry that AI systems will evolve to the point where they can become conscious beings and outsmart humans. There are also worries that an AI system would become unmanageable. This could lead to disastrous consequences, such as the annihilation of all life on Earth.
