Egypt Launches Digital Platform to Combat Phone Smuggling. Egypt has introduced a new electronic system to combat mobile phone smuggling, promote local manufacturing, and ensure fair competition. The system, developed by the Finance Ministry and the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, features a mobile app called “Telephony” (My Phone) for registering imported phones.

Key aspects of the system:

1. Travelers can bring one phone for personal use without paying fees, but only once every three months.

2.The “Telephony” app enables online registration and electronic payment of fees.

3. The system, launched on January 1, 2025, does not affect phones activated before that date.

Goals of the new system:

1. Curb mobile phone smuggling
2. Encourage local manufacturing
3. Ensure fair competition
4.Protect consumers from counterfeit or smuggled devices

The Egyptian government aims to create a more transparent and regulated mobile phone market, benefiting both consumers and local manufacturers.

Under the launched mechanism, customs duties and taxes on imported mobile phones will remain unchanged and every citizen coming from abroad will be allowed to bring with him one mobile phone for personal use that is exempt from fees for a period of three months.

The statement added that the mobile application “Telephony” should be used by citizens to register their imported mobile phones online.
