In April 2025, TechPolyp announced the launch of the Meta Edit app, a video content creation and editing tool similar to CapCut. Edits had a bigger debut than its direct competitor, ByteDance’s CapCut, at launch. The Instagram Edits app download enables users to create videos for Instagram Reels, Stories, and other social media platforms.

Recently, users downloaded the app for an estimated 702,900 times on iOS devices during its first two days on the market. Appfigures shows that there are 37 times more downloads on iOS than CapCut saw in its first two days of availability. These data are from app intelligence provider Appfigures.

Edits App Downloads Overtake Rivals

On Thursday, the Edits app reached 1.2 million iOS downloads and 5.9 million Android downloads, totalling 7.1 million downloads. The comparative analysis reveals that CapCut was downloaded only 83,500 times in its first three days on iOS and Android. To be fair, CapCut was only available in half of the global markets at launch. However, even if its numbers were doubled or tripled, Edits would be far ahead.

TechPolyp notes that users downloaded the Edits App 381,000 times in the first three days in the U.S. Interestingly enough, CapCut had been downloaded just 3,400 times during its U.S. debut. In this more direct comparison, Edits’ U.S. launch was 112x the size of CapCut’s.

Edits’ rapid adoption also led to the app climbing up the high ladder during its debut. According to Appfigures, this could help boost Edits App downloads further and increase competition. These figures also demonstrate the power of Meta’s network effects. This is especially so when it comes to launching new apps that benefit from its broader social networking ecosystem.

The new Instagram companion app hit No. 1 on the U.S. iPhone App Store’s charts. This development includes the Top Overall apps and Top Apps (minus games) on its first day, April 22. On the second day, it dropped to No. 2 on both charts. However, the Edits App download remained at No. 3 before falling to No. 3 on Friday.

TechPolyp notes that the App Store tracks top apps by number of downloads and velocity of new installs. Consequently, the Edits App download has received ratings that currently rank higher than CapCut, according to Appfigures, which ranked it No. 14 overall. Similarly, CapCut was No. 10 among the top non-game apps in the U.S. App Store after its first three days on the market.

Beyond Increasing Download History

Notwithstanding this impressive Edits app download history, the app still needs to catch up with CapCut’s overall user base. The ByteDance-owned app is popular with TikTok content creators. Its developers launched it in April 2020. Since then, users have downloaded it on iOS and Android 1.22 billion times worldwide, excluding China.

It is noteworthy that the Edits app has received different reactions from creators. According to reports from social media marketing consultant Lia Haberman, in her recent newsletter, several users laud the Edits app’s ease of use, in-app analytics, and ad-free nature. They also praised its support for 4K video and the ability to export watermark-free files. Conversely, critics notably confirmed that Edits still lacked features provided by CapCut. These include templates and a range of transition effects.

In time, beyond the trending news about the Edits app download, the developers need to do more. If they do this, the app could rival CapCut. However, TechPolyp suggests introducing ads or monetizing the app.
