Bonnier News, Sweden’s leading news provider, has successfully developed and launched an internal generative AI solution, BonsAI, in just three months. This innovative tool is designed to enhance native content efficiency, improve quality, and boost audience engagement.

The Need for Internal GenAI Solution

Dilem Güler, Director of Business Development at Bonnier News, emphasized the importance of creating an internal GenAI solution. “Instead of relying on external tools, we wanted to develop a safe and certified environment that aligns with our business needs and standards,” she explained.

Partnership with Google News Initiative

Bonnier News partnered with the Google News Initiative (GNI) to build BonsAI, leveraging Google Cloud solutions like BigQuery and Gemini. This collaboration enabled the team to develop and launch the tool quickly, thanks to their existing Google infrastructure.

Benefits of BonsAI

BonsAI automates backend tasks, such as background research and interview transcription, freeing up time for the team to focus on strategic work. The tool also optimizes ad generation and enhances campaign offerings. Testing revealed impressive results, with BonsAI-generated images achieving an average CTR of 0.65%, outperforming stock images.

Inclusive Approach and High Adoption Rate

Bonnier News prioritized an inclusive approach, providing training and support to employees at all levels of technical expertise. This led to a high adoption rate of BonsAI among journalists and advertising teams, with 72% of users finding the images helpful.

Future Plans and Collaboration

The team plans to apply their agile approach to future projects, leveraging their Google infrastructure and partnership with GNI. “Our relationship with Google is a conversation and partnership, where we learn from each other,” said Dilem Güler.
