In a recent interview with The Free Press, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described his former business partner and co-founder Elon Musk as “a bully” who “likes to get in fights.” Altman and Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015, but Musk departed the company in 2018. Since then, the two have been embroiled in a complex series of legal proceedings, including personal allegations.

Altman acknowledged that Musk played a significant role in OpenAI’s early days, calling him a “legendary entrepreneur.” However, their relationship has deteriorated over time, with Musk’s legal team recently petitioning for an injunction to prevent OpenAI from transitioning into a fully for-profit organization. Meta has also supported this request.

Altman believes that Musk’s issues with OpenAI’s direction stem from his desire for control over the company.

Everything we’re doing, I believe Elon would be happy about if he were in control of OpenAI.”

Altman commented. This suggests that the ongoing legal disputes are, in part, a struggle for control and influence.

When asked about the potential for Musk to abuse his influence over the incoming US government, Altman refrained from making any direct accusations. Instead, he noted that individuals who behave poorly on social media may still not abuse the system of government.

The legal disputes between OpenAI and Musk began in March 2024, with Musk alleging that OpenAI defrauded investors, committed wire fraud, and engaged in anti-competitive practices. The situation remains complex and contentious, with no clear resolution in sight.

The relationship between OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk has deteriorated significantly, with Altman describing Musk as “a bully.” The ongoing legal disputes between the two parties are a manifestation of this strained relationship, with control and direction at the heart of the issues.
