WhatsApp is one of the most widely used messaging app with over two billion monthly users worldwide.

Meta, Whatsapp parent company has announced that it is making some modifications to WhatsApp’s operating system. One of the implications of the new modification is that Whatsapp will no longer be supported by some older iPhone and Android devices. These devices simply fall short of the required operating system to support the most recent version of the messaging app. The change is expected to come into effect from May 2025.

Apple and Android Devices Expected To Be Affected

Apple devices from 2013 and 2014, including the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, are expected to be affected. A range of older Android devices will also be affected. Android devices that are unable to update to Lollipop (version 5.0) or later will be affected.

Among the Android devices that are expected to be affected are the Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, and Galaxy S4 Mini from Samsung.

Other Android devices include Motorola’s Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, and Moto E 2014; HTC’s One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601. Also on the list are LG’s Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, and L90; and Sony’s Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, and Xperia.

According to Meta, the modifications are necessary to maintain WhatsApp’s security and functionality as mobile technology develops. Users who still rely on older model devices may be impacted by the change. The same compatibility limitations will apply to WhatsApp Business as well.

Though not too many users will be affected, it serves as another reminder of how quickly digital platforms are changing. Even the most popular apps are becoming outdated on older devices.

Users can view the current operating system on their phone. Click: Settings > About (iPhone) > General Settings > About Phone > Version of Android (Android).
