With the launch of Alexa+, Amazon’s AI-enhanced assistant, the company has confirmed that starting March 28, 2025, local voice processing will no longer be available on certain Echo devices. Instead, all voice recordings will be processed in the cloud. This change will affect models like the Echo Dot (4th Gen), Echo Show 10, and Echo Show 15, which previously allowed some Alexa requests to be handled locally.
Amazon notified users via email, explaining that those who had enabled “Do Not Send Voice Recordings” will now be switched to “Don’t Save Recordings.” This means voice data will still be sent to Amazon’s cloud for processing but will be deleted afterward.
The company cites the need for increased cloud computing power to support Alexa+’s new generative AI features, including enhanced personalization and deeper integration with services like Amazon Music and Prime Video. While Amazon emphasizes its commitment to privacy, the shift raises concerns about data security and user control over personal information.
