Rwanda has taken a significant step toward solving one of its biggest agricultural challenges. Cold Solutions Rwanda has secured up to $18 million in financing to build a modern, temperature-controlled storage facility in Kigali. The money comes from the Africa Go Green Fund, which is managed by Cygnum Capital. This investment is expected to help farmers, food processors, and exporters keep their products fresh for longer, reduce waste, and reach more markets.

Designed to Tackle Huge Post-Harvest Losses

Rwanda’s agriculture and food processing sectors are growing rapidly. However, the country has struggled with a serious shortage of cold storage facilities and refrigerated trucks. This gap has led to huge post-harvest losses. Fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and meat often spoil before they can be sold because they are not kept at the right temperature.

The new facility is designed to change that. It will be built in the Kigali Prime Economic Zone and will initially have space for 4,000 pallets of goods. There is also room to expand to 8,000 pallets as demand grows. This means farmers and businesses will finally have a reliable place to store their perishable products safely.

A One-Stop Shop for Cold Storage and Logistics

What makes this project stand out is its integrated approach. Cold Solutions Rwanda is not just building a warehouse. The new facility will combine cold storage, produce handling, packing, and refrigerated distribution all in one place. This is important because it reduces the number of times products need to be moved, which helps maintain their quality.

The company already operates a temperature-controlled packhouse in Kigali. That packhouse includes an avocado processing line that helps Rwandan growers meet the strict quality and shelf-life standards required by export markets. The new cold storage facility will work together with the packhouse to create a complete cold chain from the farm gate to the final destination.

Serving More Than Just Agriculture

While the facility will primarily support the agriculture sector, its benefits go beyond farming. The project will also provide temperature-controlled storage for pharmaceutical companies and other businesses that need strict temperature management. This is crucial for medicines and vaccines that can lose their effectiveness if not stored properly. By serving both food and health sectors, the facility will play a vital role in Rwanda’s overall economic development.

A Green and Resilient Investment

The Africa Go Green Fund is focused on financing projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support climate-friendly growth. The new Cold Solutions facility fits this mission perfectly. It will include a 440-kilowatt rooftop solar installation, which will provide clean energy to help power the cold storage operations. The project is also targeting internationally recognised green-building certification.

In addition to solar power, the facility will have backup power and advanced thermal-control systems. These features will ensure that stored products remain safe even if there are interruptions to the national electricity grid. This kind of resilience is essential for a country that wants to build a dependable food supply chain.

What Leaders Are Saying

Suki Muia, investment director at ARCH, which is the parent platform for Cold Solutions Rwanda, described the financing as a historic milestone for cold-chain infrastructure in the country. “Our new, modern greenfield facility will complement the packhouse, giving farmers, processors and exporters the cold-chain capacity to move produce reliably from the farm gate to its final destination,” Muia said.

Laurène Aigrain, managing director of the Africa Go Green Fund, explained why this investment matters. “Rwanda has established itself as a regional leader in agricultural transformation and value-added food processing, yet the availability of modern cold-chain infrastructure has not kept pace with growing demand,” she said. “Cold Solutions Rwanda is helping close that gap by creating the storage and logistics backbone needed for businesses to expand, reduce product losses, and improve supply-chain efficiency”.

A Growing Regional Network

Cold Solutions Rwanda is part of a larger regional strategy. The company is the Rwandan operating platform of the ARCH Cold Chain Solutions East Africa Fund. This fund is building cold-chain infrastructure across East Africa, including in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Mombasa. The idea is to create a connected network of temperature-controlled storage and logistics assets that can serve the entire region.

The company’s flagship facility in Tatu City, Kenya, has already proven that this cold-chain model works. The success in Kenya gave investors confidence to expand into Rwanda, and the new Kigali facility is expected to follow the same path.

What This Means for Ordinary Rwandans

For the average Rwandan, the benefits of this project may not be immediately visible. But over time, the impact will be significant. When farmers lose less of their harvest, they earn more money. When food processors can store their products safely, they can produce more and create jobs. When exporters can meet international quality standards, Rwanda earns more foreign exchange, which strengthens the economy.

The new facility is expected to begin operations in the second quarter of 2027. When it opens, it will mark a new chapter in Rwanda’s journey toward a modern, resilient, and sustainable food system. For a country that has already earned a reputation as a leader in agricultural transformation, this $18 million investment is another bold step forward.
