The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has cautioned telecommunications operators to promptly improve their service quality or risk incurring regulatory penalties. This warning was issued due to an increasing number of complaints from subscribers regarding network issues.

The warning, referred to by industry experts as a “riot act,” arises from significant dissatisfaction among consumers who claim that telecom services have been mostly inconsistent since the holiday season.

To showcase its determination, the NCC has released a data-focused network performance report, created in collaboration with Ookla. Ookla is global authority in network intelligence and performance assessment, which provides data illustrating how network operators are performing on key metrics.

The report highlighted an increasing disparity in Nigeria’s telecom industry, with certain operators making significant advancements in high-speed services, while others continue to face challenges with reliability.

MTN

The results indicate that MTN exhibited the most robust national performance profile. The telco has consistently achieved high download and upload speeds while maintaining relatively stable latency.

According to the report, MTN has preserved a consistent network experience nationwide. The report positioned MTN above rivals in terms of overall Quality of Service.

Globacom

The report presented a less favourable view of Globacom, revealing that latencies are significantly impacting its network performance.

The NCC observed that these problems are directly affecting real-time services, such as video calls and online payment systems. The overall has led to a subpar user experience for Glo network subscribers.

T2 (9Mobile)

Also, according to the report, T2 (9mobile) has inconsistent performance in various regions. Although the operator noted some sporadic high-speed spikes. It stated in its assessment that there is still “a significant gap” in its overall national Quality of Service.

Airtel

The report indicated a decline in Airtel’s performance as the industry shifts to 5G implementation, with latency being marked as a critical area that needs immediate enhancement.

The regulator acknowledged Airtel’s dominance in urban areas. It noted that the network maintains a competitive advantage in download speeds due to its 4G infrastructure.

Released every three months, the report aims to enable consumers to make informed choices based on unbiased analytics rather than operators’ marketing claims.

Enhancing Regulations Using an Evidence-Based Method

The Commission stated that its collaboration with Ookla signifies a strategic move towards regulation based on data. It is altogether aiming to enhance transparency and accountability within the telecom industry.

“We are moving towards a regulation based on data to prevent accusations of bias against us.” “While I am not permitted to discuss this matter officially, I assure you that what I’m conveying reflects the Commission’s perspective,” stated an NCC official who wants to remain anonymous.

The official emphasised that the NCC’s updated strategy would eliminate claims of partiality while enhancing regulatory oversight.

He elaborated that regulation grounded in evidence would help attract infrastructure investment and enhance connectivity nationwide.

“Regulation based on data enhances transparency and promotes improved service provision across the country.” “Recognising these service gaps enables the Commission to implement evidence-based policy measures that draw infrastructure investment and guarantee dependable connectivity for every Nigerian,” the official mentioned.

Following the report’s release, industry analysts say that telecom companies are now facing significant pressure to resolve enduring network problems. Recall that the NCC recently issued a statement regarding the poor quality of internet service in Abuja.
