ChatGPT has reached a significant commercial milestone in mobile usage worldwide. The ChatGPT Mobile App has now generated three billion dollars in global consumer spending. This figure covers combined purchases on iOS and Android platforms since launch. The app first appeared in May 2023, initially available only on iOS.
What stands out is how sharply recent growth accelerated. Most of the spending occurred within the current year alone. In 2025, consumers spent an estimated 2.48 billion dollars on the ChatGPT Mobile App. This reflects a year-over-year increase of more than 400%. In comparison, users spent $ 487 million in 2024.
Earlier performance shows how fast adoption expanded. In its first year, 2023, the app earned just $ 42.9 million. Revenue then surged dramatically the following year. This growth pattern highlights how quickly consumer trust in mobile AI tools formed. Moreover, it signals a shift in how people value everyday AI assistance.

When compared with established apps, the results remain striking. It took ChatGPT only 31 months to reach $3 billion in valuation. TikTok, the highest-earning consumer app, took 58 months to get to the same level. Streaming services followed a slower path. Disney+ reached the figure in 42 months. HBO Max required 46 months.
These comparisons underline how rapidly the ChatGPT Mobile App captured paying users. The pace reflects changing digital habits and growing comfort with AI subscriptions.
ChatGPT Mobile App: Expanding Revenue Paths and Competitive Terrain
Subscription pricing plays a significant role in this performance. Many users pay $20 per month for ChatGPT Plus access. Others choose the premium Pro tier at $200 per month. These subscriptions account for most of the current revenue on the ChatGPT Mobile App. However, they may not remain the only source of income.
The company is exploring additional monetisation paths. Developer tools already generate value outside consumer subscriptions. Advertising may follow, mainly as AI features expand. Recently, ChatGPT launched an internal app marketplace. This store could introduce new revenue streams in the future.
Competition within AI apps is also intensifying. xAI’s Grok shows a similar spending trajectory among AI-focused apps. Although released later, Grok’s revenue growth closely tracks early ChatGPT Mobile App’s performance. This suggests strong demand for conversational AI across platforms.

Meanwhile, other technology firms are adapting rapidly. Google is testing AI-driven advertising placements within search experiences. These include AI Mode, AI Overviews, and shopping results. Discover pages are also becoming more AI-powered.
Anthropic, by contrast, targets enterprise customers rather than consumers. Reports suggest it aims to reach $70 billion in revenue by 2028. Still, consumer momentum remains strongest around the ChatGPT Mobile App. Its rapid rise shows how mobile AI has entered mainstream digital life.
