OpenAI is set to roll out a long-awaited “adult mode” for its main AI chatbot, ChatGPT, with the feature expected to be launched in the first quarter of 2026, according to company leaders.
This is a remarkable transition in how the AI platform manages mature content, potentially easing existing restrictions for verified adult users. Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s Chief Executive of Applications, detailed this week that the launch schedule for adult mode depends on the effectiveness of a new AI-driven age verification system that is currently in early testing.
Reports suggest that “Adult mode” is likely to launch in the first quarter of 2026, assuming the age-prediction technology effectively differentiates adult users from minors. Unlike conventional age verification, which relies exclusively on self-reported information, OpenAI’s method uses behavioural and contextual indicators to assess a user’s age.
This aims to stop minors from accessing adult features while granting adults greater flexibility in their interactions with the chatbot. The system is currently being tested in specific countries to verify its ability to accurately identify teenage users without incorrectly categorising adults as such.
The concept of adult mode was first introduced by OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, in early 2025. Altman stated that the company plans to loosen restrictions for adult users by introducing features that may allow for more candid discussions about relationships and sexuality once age has been reliably verified. He also discussed the possibility of allowing mature content for verified adults.
