The real grandmaster of network providers in Africa, MTN, has recently endorsed a gigantic innovation in one of its countries of operation. MTN South Africa has introduced a nationwide digital identity system that uses fingerprint and facial recognition to authenticate customers in all its stores. The “yellow” network provider’s initiative aims to speed up registration processes while curbing fraud.
According to the Communication Risk Information Centre (Comric), there were fraudulent activities which happened in the telecom sector in 2024. This incident cost the industry R5.3 billion (about $300 million). Interestingly, the brand linked the incident to identity theft and SIM swap scams, as major contributors. MTN South Africa says the new digital identity system is a decisive measure against such crimes.
Moving forward, the launch is in connection with a six-month pilot covering 20% of MTN outlets. In this instance, the technology significantly reduced onboarding time and blocked fraudulent activities. Subsequently, this digital identity system makes MTN the first mobile operator in South Africa to adopt biometric verification at this scale. It is noteworthy that the brand developed the system in collaboration with Vigilate AI, a global leader in biometric solutions.
In Case You Missed It:
Cornelia van Heerden, MTN South Africa’s Executive for Customer Operations, described the deployment as a significant investment in customer security and experience. According to her, “We have redesigned the onboarding journey of the digital identity system to be faster and safer.” She further added that the system has become more intuitive, thereby ensuring that convenience is never compromised.
MTN and Vigilate AI Revolutionize Digital Identity System
In the same vein, Vigilate AI CEO Daniel Hartwright called the partnership a milestone for secure verification in the country. He notes that, “Marrying MTN’s market reach with our biometric expertise redefines what customer-focused outfits should be. He would also conclude that the digital identity system enables secure onboarding for all users.
Van Heerden added that feedback from trial locations was overwhelmingly positive. She acknowledged that customers commend the faster sign-up process of the digital identity system. She also mentioned customers’ reaction to the accurate verification and ease of use.
The biometric rollout forms part of MTN’s broader “Ambition 2025” strategy. Similarly, this aims to position the company at the forefront of digital innovation in Africa while delivering secure, future-ready services.
